There are a few avirulent or weakly beta-hemolytic Brachyspira strains that are predominantly nonpathogenic. Brachyspira is a genus of bacteria classified within the phylum Spirochaetes. Brachyspira species include pathogens in pigs, birds, dogs, and humans. VetMIC Brachyspira panels with antimicrobial agents (tiamulin, valnemulin, doxycycline, lincomycin, tylosin and ampicillin) were used for susceptibility testing of B. hyodysenteriae. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by the broth dilution procedure.

Of the five main species found in swine, two are considered important pathogens: Brachyspira hyodysenteriae is the causative agents of swine dysentery (Taylor and Alexander 1971), whilst B. pilosicoli causes porcine intestinal spirochaetosis (Taylor et al. 1980). hyodysenteriae may be applicable also for monitoring of antimicrobial susceptibility in B. pilosicoli. Brachyspira hyodysenteriae

This is the first confirmed report of natural infection of chickens with B. hyodysenteriae. Experimental infection studies are required to assess the pathogenic potential of these B. hyodysenteriae isolates. The study was performed on 21 isolates of B. hyodysenteriae, collected between January 2006 to December 2010 from cases of swine dysentery. VetMIC Brachyspira panels with antimicrobial agents (tiamulin, valnemulin, doxycycline, lincomycin, tylosin and ampicillin) were used for susceptibility testing of B. hyodysenteriae. Brachyspira hyodysenteriae is the aetiological agent of swine dysentery, a globally distributed disease that causes profound economic loss, impedes the free trade and movement of animals, and has significant impact on pig health.

References Swine dysentery is associated with infection by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae which has historically been the only recognized strongly beta-hemolytic Brachyspira sp. However, in recent years, not all strongly beta-hemolytic isolates have been identified as B. hyodysenteriae using PCR assays specific for this Treponema hyodysenteriae Other names i ›ATCC 27164 ›Brachyspira hyodysenteriae (Harris et al. 1972) Ochiai et al.
